It might feel unfair, jarring, or simply confusing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Being called to the dinner table<\/strong> might feel like stepping into a space they don\u2019t quite know how to belong in especially if it\u2019s tense, silent, or rushed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Having a parent finally sit and listen to them read<\/strong> might feel like the greatest honour \u2014 or the most nerve-wracking test, depending on how it&#8217;s framed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inviting you to play a sport or an online game<\/strong> isn\u2019t just play. It\u2019s their way of saying: \u201cBe in my world. Know me.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-white-color has-pale-pink-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-100c7346b88f3fcdeb9d4527c78dea78\" style=\"border-width:7px\"><blockquote><p>\u201cWhen a child asks you to play, they\u2019re not just inviting you into a game they\u2019re inviting you into their world.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When we begin to ask ourselves, <em>\u201cWhat might this feel like from their side?\u201d<\/em> something remarkable happens. Our voices soften. Our timing shifts. Our urgency calms. We meet our children not with control, but with compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Empathy Begins at the Table<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At The Table Talk Project, we often talk about how the dinner table is <a href=\"https:\/\/thetabletalkproject.org\/connection-is-key\/\">more than a place to eat<\/a>, it\u2019s a place to <em>see<\/em> each other. Not just physically, but emotionally and relationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we bring this lens the child\u2019s perspective into our mealtimes, chores, homework routines, and digital downtime, we begin to raise children who feel <em>understood<\/em>. And children who feel understood are more likely to speak, connect, and grow into adults who do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-white-color has-pale-pink-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-ab1f758bb8e6c5af7b86a5acc1454779\" style=\"border-width:7px;border-radius:0px\"><blockquote><p>\u201cChildren who feel understood are more likely to speak, connect, and grow into adults who do the same.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Needs to Change?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Could we slow down our requests?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Could we offer more context instead of commands?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Could we honour the sacredness of their play, their space, their fears, their feelings?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The shift begins with a single question:<br><strong>\u201cWhat does this moment look like through their eyes?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-white-color has-pale-pink-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-fe9d3ec4c845a636559f8faf47225918\" style=\"border-width:7px\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThe question that changes everything: \u2018What might this feel like for them?\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Here is your call to Actio<\/strong>n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, we invite you to try one moment of parenting with this lens. At the dinner table, in the car, during a bedtime story &#8211; pause and ask:<br><strong>\u201cIf I were them\u2026 what might I be feeling?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us know how it goes.
